Nestled in the heart of Gisborne at 190 Derby Street, the Gisborne Cosmopolitan Club offers a hearty and authentic dining experience that locals and visitors alike have come to appreciate. This welcoming restaurant specializes in comforting New Zealand-style cuisine with a strong emphasis on the freshest seafood, served in generous portions at incredibly affordable prices.
The menu showcases a delightful selection of seafood dishes that are as satisfying as they are flavorful. Highlights include the Fresh Fish of the Day with Chips & Salad, a classic that captures the ocean’s bounty perfectly, and the indulgent Seafood Basket, brimming with a variety of crispy, golden treats for just NZ$25.00. Those seeking something uniquely Kiwi will enjoy the Paua Fritter Meal or the Mussel Fritter Meal, each served alongside crispy chips and fresh salad — a true taste of the region’s coastal heritage.
To elevate the meal, diners can enhance their plates with an array of sides like creamy garlic prawns, creamy mushroom sauce, or crispy onion rings, adding layers of richness and texture. Main dishes such as the Sausage Meal with Eggs Chips & Salad or the Corn Fritter Stack provide hearty comfort food options that feel like a warm embrace on a plate.
The atmosphere at Gisborne Cosmopolitan Club is both inviting and unpretentious, filled with the friendly buzz of locals and staff who greet guests with genuine warmth. While some visitors have noted the venue's classic, slightly dated interior with warm, low lighting, this timeless charm only adds to its character and sense of belonging. Whether you’re there for a casual meal, a private function, or a lively night out with entertainment options like darts, pool, and bingo, the Club serves as a vibrant community hub where good food and good company come naturally.
Customer reviews reflect this sentiment vividly: "Very friendly and welcoming staff, nice food and atmosphere," praises Andrew Campbell. "I remember this place; it’s been over 25-30 years since I dropped someone off at the housie. My first impression was that I was not impressed; it looked dated and tired, with low lighting. The housie venue had a better atmosphere. The pokies were equally uninviting and dated. Gambling sucks. I had paua with fry bread—was it even paua? It was bland and tasteless, in my opinion."
